Colorado Health Access Survey The Colorado Trust

About the Colorado Health Access Survey

The Colorado Health Access Survey (CHAS) is an extensive survey in Colorado of health care coverage, access and utilization. The survey is a program of The Colorado Trust and is the follow-up to the 2008-2009 baseline survey (Colorado Household Survey).

Information from the survey helps to inform discussions and advance solutions about health care by policy makers, and health care, business and community leaders. The Colorado Trust believes that having a reliable source of data is integral to public policy and systems changes that will advance the health and well-being of the people of Colorado.

CHAS is unique because of its extensive sample size and the depth and breadth of the questions asked. CHAS is a household survey, meaning that the person responding is asked questions about themselves and each individual living in the household, providing a more comprehensive understanding of coverage and access issues in Colorado than a survey collecting data on a single household member.

Administered between May 10, 2011, and August 14, 2011, the 2011 CHAS successfully conducted full surveys of 10,352 households, weighted to represent all Coloradans.

The data collection for the 2011 CHAS was managed by the Colorado Health Institute (CHI). CHI also maintains the public use and research files on behalf of The Colorado Trust, provides ongoing in-depth analysis of the data and responds to individual questions about the data from CHAS and the 2008-2009 baseline survey.

Continuing support by The Colorado Trust will ensure the survey is conducted every other year through at least 2017.

About the Colorado Household Survey (COHS)

In November 2008, the 2008-2009 COHS was initiated to collect Colorado-specific information about the health care coverage, access and utilization Findings from this statewide household survey, which was fielded from Nov. 12, 2008, through March 13, 2009, provide baseline data for the ongoing survey, which has been re-named the Colorado Health Access Survey. The Colorado Trust is dedicated to continuing CHAS every other year through at least 2017.

The 2008-2009 COHS was also funded by The Colorado Trust, and was managed by the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing, with support from the Colorado Health Institute.
